How proliferate works in MTG.

When an effect tells you to proliferate, choose any number of players and permanents that already have at least one counter. For each one, choose one kind of counter it already has and add one more counter of that kind. You may choose none, and you never have to increase an opponent's beneficial counter.

For example, if you control a creature with two +1/+1 counters and a planeswalker with four loyalty counters, one proliferate can give the creature a third +1/+1 counter and the planeswalker a fifth loyalty counter. It adds only one counter to each chosen object, even when that object has several kinds of counters.

Counters proliferate can increase

Proliferate works with +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters, loyalty, poison, experience, energy, charge, oil, lore and other named counters. It does not create the first counter, copy tokens, double every counter, or affect a permanent that has no counters yet.

Common rules interactions

  • You choose the players and permanents as the proliferate instruction resolves; proliferate does not target.
  • A permanent with hexproof or protection can still be chosen.
  • If an object has multiple counter types, you add one counter of only one existing type.
  • Poison counters belong to players, so proliferate can move an opponent closer to losing the game.
